When we opened our practice 20 years ago in Denver, people were embarrassed that a hearing loss would be considered a sign of aging. Today it is a common indication of an active lifestyle. Approximately one in ten people are experiencing hearing loss. These hearing losses may be ignored or denied, but the impact of the hearing losses cannot.

A reduction of hearing impacts one’s ability to communicate easily with friends, family and coworkers. This can lead to changes in relationships and a lower quality of life affecting social relationships, career advancement, and even job loss.

A moderate hearing loss, which in a quiet one-to-one environment of an office may appear normal, can negatively impact their communication abilities and relationships. The person who says something like, “I hear okay if people will talk clearly.” This comment is likely a symptom of a moderate hearing loss. They should have their hearing assessed.

The view of hearing loss and hearing aids has changed. Hearing aids no longer carry this stigma.
